No Matter What You Are Feeling, Ruppert Law Firm Can Guide You

Family Law Attorneys Helping Clients Resolve Paternity Disputes

A paternity dispute occurs when the identity of a biological father is uncertain. In Pennsylvania, a man whose name does not appear on a child’s birth certificate must prove his paternity before he can seek custody. On the other hand, a mother also needs to prove paternity if she wants to get child support from the alleged father.

Whether you are a mother or a father, Ruppert Law Firm LLC is here to help. If you have a paternity dispute in Western Pennsylvania, we will help you find the truth and protect your rights and your child’s rights.

The Process Is More Complex Than Taking A Test

We are fortunate to live in an age when DNA testing is not only possible, but also quick, reliable and relatively inexpensive. In the past, if either party believed that the wrong man was listed on the birth certificate (or the putative father denied paternity), there was no scientific way to prove a biological relation. We can now use DNA  to reveal the truth, but that’s not the end of the story. The legal process can still be complicated.

A DNA test can demonstrate a biological relation, but that doesn’t automatically confer legal fatherhood. This only happens when paternity is established. The process for establishing paternity will vary somewhat depending on the following factors:

  • Whether one party objects to or contests paternity, and if so, which one
  • Which party brings the legal action and for what purpose (seeking child support vs. seeking custody rights, for instance)

Regardless of which side of this dispute you find yourself on, our attorneys can help. This includes helping fathers establish paternity, giving them the option to seek custody and giving their children inheritance rights, the right to seek family medical history and other important benefits. We can also help women or men who are seeking to contest paternity.
